You know those dreams that stick with you for years afterwards? Well, Sacrificial Grounds is loosely based on one—proving my argument that writers work even in their sleep.
I know you don’t want to be bored with all the details of someone else’s dream, so I’ll keep to the key points.
So in my dream, I walked into the sweetest town you’ll ever see. And in a very Lynchian twist of fate, it is later made known to me that the lovely town is populated solely by a cannibalistic cult.
To cut the long story short, I ended up getting diced and shared around like birthday cake. Fun!
The demonic Stepford village dream remained stored away in the back of my head for years. A little plot idea just marinating in my subconscious for later use.
Then I started work on The Bell Witch series, and it clicked. If ever there was a town set to become a cult in and of itself, Black River is it! Here was my chance to put the idea to work.
Now, don’t worry, none of what I have said are spoilers. I hope you have fun reading about what an isolated cult of soccer moms could get up to (and just how the Bell Witch would play with them all), as much as I did writing it.
I hope you enjoy your return to Black River. If it leaves you creeped out enough to start giving your kind elderly neighbors the side-eye, I’ll know I’ve done my job.
For the best reading experience, also grab a copy of The Harvest (Book 1 of The Bell Witch series).
See you in the Shadows,
Sara Clancy
