Berkley Street

Twenty years ago, Shane Ryan’s parents disappeared within the halls of their family home. Now, more relatives have vanished, leaving Shane as the prime suspect. But a childhood memory is stirring in his mind — of a long-forgotten encounter with the sinister monster that has always lurked just beyond the house.

The Lighthouse

Against the backdrop of a sunny island and blue skies, Shane is called upon to continue the job he’s best at: hunting malevolent spirits intent on murdering the living. The beautiful lighthouse watching over the island has given him a false sense of escape as he encounters the terrifying forces within.

The Town of Griswold

In search of a break from ghost hunting, Shane spends a day exploring a quaint New England town. Unfortunately, his plans are interrupted when he comes across the deadly ghost of the depraved Abel, who wreaks havoc on the community of Griswold.

Sanford Hospital

Shane Ryan is in Sanford Hospital for burn treatments. His recovery is thwarted when he crosses Nurse Ruth, who is as odious and dead as they come. Shane must get rid of her, and he joins forces with friends – alongside a few ghostly comrades – in a terrifying battle between good and evil.

Kurkow Prison

Shane and his friends are tasked with another ghostbusting mission – the gruesome demons at Kurkow Prison. When one of the new owners mistakenly cuts the iron chains keeping the ghosts locked inside, the property becomes overrun by restless souls.

Lake Nutaq

Shane’s idyllic getaway in the woods is cut short by a maniacal ghost named Broken Nose. Ill-prepared, he enlists the help of his friend Frank, and The Englishman, a crazed lunatic with a knack for killing. Still, nothing could prepare them for the evil spirits eager to cause misery and death.

Slater Mill

The soul-weary Shane looks to escape the emotional and physical scars of his gruesome occupation. But he has yet another job in Slater Mill. As he prepares for the upcoming battle, he is visited by an old acquaintance whose timing couldn’t be worse.

Borgin Keep

Shane has been hunting ghosts all over New England, assuming that the jobs were random, till he ran into The Watchers. When their leader sends him a gruesome message, their killing spree becomes more brazen, and Shane knows he must stop them before it’s too late.

Amherst Burial Ground

In the serene town of Amherst, the ghost of a little boy, Samson, possesses a hideous appetite that keeps residents on edge. Meanwhile, Shane is in a deep depression, overcoming a tragic loss. He is quickly realizing that this encounter with Samson and The Watchers may very well be his last.

    The Haunted Reading Room

Review: BERKLEY STREET by Ron RipleyI don’t know what author Ron Ripley’s nightmares are like, but he certainly knows how to bring on the scares, in every single story. BERKLEY STREET is frightening, very much, and I finished unsure which scared me more: the haunts, or the humans [shudder]. BERKLEY STREET is part of the MOVING IN series. Do read this, but not at night and not alone.

Full of twist and turns. Love that the characters are so well portrayed. Full of descriptions so that I could picture all of it. Liked that descriptions were so detailed. Again an amazing book that made me want to see what would happen next but I didn’t want to finish either.

I stayed up all nite to read this one. Last book I did that was “Christine” written by Steven King. I just couldn’t stop had to see where this book was going. I really enjoyed this book, I read quite of bit of horror, mystery type books for over 50 years now and when I can’t put it down that means this book is really special. This is not my first book by Ron and it definitely will not be my last. He has become one of my “go to” authors when looking for something good to read, he’ll become one of your’s too!

This book may well be my favorite of all but it is so hard to say. This tale of horror inside an extremely haunted house was a mind blower. As I read all I could think was don’t let it end. If you are looking for a great read this is it. Just be ready to stay awake! I will go so far to say no writter since Koontz has had me waiting so anxiously for the next book to come. I hope in the future Mr. Ripley will expand to long novels and someday see his name on the NY Times best seller list.

Loved this story that revolves around a very haunted house when the ghostly inhabitants take care of the premises. Shanes quest to learn what happened to his parents kept me wondering whether they were alive or dead. A great read for anyone who enjoys a scary twist filled story.

I enjoy a good ghost story, but they can be hard to find.In -Berkley Street-, Ripley does a fine job building a cast of memorable characters – both living and dead – and putting them to work in the service of a compelling and original story. This is a writer who knows his craft, shows us how characters and their word, and perhaps most importantly, knows when not to explain.Likewise, Ripley is clearly a man who knows how way around the world in his head. Reading -Berkley Street-, one feels that Ripley has explored his world will enough that he feels no need for excessive exposition.Occasional minor copy-editing errors don’t detract from the enjoyment of this solid effort, which relies significantly more on psychological suspense than on cheap “jump-scare” tactics. At the same time, the story keeps a quick place aided by short chapters, and doesn’t get bogged down (or, dare I say, waterlogged) in efforts to be too literary. I felt that the ending of the book unfolded a bit too stocky, but still found it very satisfying.I look forward to enjoying more of Mr. Ripley’s work.

Every so often you come across a good horror novel that has just the right everything that makes it a great page turner building suspense that lets the imagination run wild . This is one of those good books if you like a good haunted house story with twists like The Shining then this will be one you won’t put down. The author grabs you within the first chapter, not graphic or gory your imagination can do that for you. The characters are visual and the ghost are so well created. I am sure others who read this book will agree everyone enjoys the ghost Carl and RobertoSince this is a series book I am sure book 2 will keep the readers on the edge

Throughout the entire book. Very well written from both an editorial and storytelling sense. Loved the characters, both living and dead. I hated to have it end…But all good things must come to an end, I suppose. Highly recommend!

WOW. Talk about “everything but the kitchen sink”, this book has it! Scares, thrills & chills, a mystery of why the house became what it is (still not answered by the end of the book, I might add)… You name it, this story pretty much contains it. And since it would seem this is only the first book in a series set on that accursed street, I eagerly await the next installment. Write faster, Ron Ripley!!

This was a decent story but not nearly as good as the five star reviews led me to believe. The main character is not particularly likable and the interactions with the ghosts seemed a bit far fetched at times. The ending was disappointing and predictable. The book moves right along but not nearly as good as I would have thought.

Too many questions left dangling. I realize that is probably for another book, but I personally do not like that tactic. I want to read a story for its merit, not because I was forced to choose it to resolve questions from one I have already read. Strong characters, great story line. I gave it 3 stars instead of 5 for the dangling hook.

Really a page turner. I did not expect to immediately get caught up in the story but I was. I loved how most of the ghosts back stories were told. My only disappointment was the ending. I guess I wanted a happy ending but rarely are their “happy ever after” in ghost stories.

I enjoyed reading “Berkley Street”, book #1 in another new series by Ron Ripley. Ripley also wrote four other trilogies: “The Boylan House”, The Blood Contract”, The Enfield Horror” and “Sherman’s Library”. All are very good as is “Berkley Street”. I am looking forward to the other books in this seres. This is an excellent haunted house, ghost story. We meet good ghosts and very mean ones.Shane Ryan is 41 years old. He returns to his childhood home at 125 Berkely Street. His parents, Hank and Fiona Ryan, disappeared from the house when Ryan was 18. There was a long legal battle as to who should gain possession of the house after his parents went missing. It was between Ryan and his father’s brother and sister-in-law. When the legal battle ended, Ryan was given possession of the house. His uncle and aunt were not happy. Ryan lets the house remain vacant until he moves in 20 years later. He moves in because he wants to find out what happened to his parents. Soon after he moves in, his aunt and uncle disappear. He soon realizes that the house is haunted. He meets many ghosts. Some are friendly, like Carl, Thaddeus and Eloise. Some are very mean, such as Vivienne, “the girl in the pond”. Ripley takes us on the journey with Ryan, as he enlists others, to find out what happened to his mother and father. The ending leaves plenty of room for the “Berkley Street” series to continue. You will be left wanting more.Ripley tells an excellent haunted house, ghost story. “Berkley Street” is well written and will hold your interest right from the start. There are many very scary moments that will give you the chills. A very tense and spooky read. The character of Shane Ryan is very well developed. You will come to like and route for Ryan through the entire book. Ripley does an excellent job taking the reader on a walk with Ryan as he pursues his goal to find his parents. If you like ghost stories and haunted house stories, you will like “Berkley Street”. If you never read any of Ripley’s other works, read this and you will be hooked. You will want to read his other trilogies. I recommend this book.

Wow… I’ve been a fan of horror books and movies for decades. I was a die-hard King fan until his ego started taking over; his books became more “philosophical” and his tales lost much of the exquisite elements of terror in his earlier works. I searched high and low for a worthy successor (believe me, I’ve read them all) but was never able to find one. Until now. Though not yet equivalent to King’s best, I have no doubt this author will reach — and possibly exceed — that lofty pinnacle of excellence in the not-too-distant future. Well done!

I really enjoy reading horror but I’m really not into zombies or vampires. You can give me an occasional demon or even a witch and I’m interested but there is nothing I like more than a ghost story…AND if you throw in some great characters, then I’m totally hooked. Well, this book doesn’t disappoint on that front. It’s a good old fashioned ghost story full of wonderful and unforgettable characters! The kind of book that you can’t wait to see what happens but you’re so sad once it ends. I could read this every Halloween along with one of my favorite Bradbury books. I so can’t wait for the sequel!

At just one hundred and seventy pages a short book. The author does a good job of describing his ghosts and the back story of Shane and his experiences in his parents house. Has very much the feel of the old ‘House’ series of films from some twenty years ago. The problem with the shortness of the book is so much time is spent on the back story that the ending is rushed. One is left with the idea that this would have been a much better book with fifty more pages of work.

This is my first Ron Ripley read, although I did buy one quite some time ago. I chose this for my Prime book of the month expecting a good ghost story and set my curiosity for Berkley Street. Also the setting of a lighthouse, which I love really got my attention. I have to admit, initially I was turned off with the bickering ghost hunters and then the graphic violence as I thought all the characters weren’t going to survive the first couple chapters, Then less than halfway through the book after all the protagonists were deceased and joined by a milieu of paranormal occurrences and specters, the story picked up quickly into a true page turner. It took me awhile to warm up to Shane Ryan a true ghostbuster and his surviving investigator, Courtney. Who was all these killer ghosts and why did they worship this one Dorothy who held them to Squirrel Island where this lighthouse was. We slowly learn of their history but are always reminded of the power of Dorothy and her menacing presence as well as her ability to get the other ghosts both old and well, fresh from the killings to obey her whims in continuing her killings for whatever reason. Since Shane was only set to be on the island for a day or so to look into a contractor’s suicide and make sure the island is in ship shape for the new owner, we are comforted by the fact that he and his entourage will be rescued. Or will they. This is when pages couldn’t turn fast enough as new action, explanations and plot twists abound. I won’t reveal anymore to spoil anything. I have to admit since this wasn’t my cup of tea in ghost stories, I was going to be generous with maybe a three star rating. I really have to compliment Ron Ripley and his writing skills as well as fertile imagination giving the standard ghost story a new boost. A nice change. I do recommend this as I see so many others have also enjoyed this book and his others, I will probably read Berkley Street and did download a bonus book so I guess Ron Ripley has found a new fan, I’ll return to my more common just scary ghost stories but rest assured I’ll know where to look when I need a change and a bit more action.

Another great installment in this series! Mr. Ripley’s imagination knows no bounds. The back story and history of each book is so detailed, it’s almost like real events. I am constantly surprised at each one and there are no punches pulled when it comes to the gorey parts. This one had an unexpected ending but hopefully it’s for a reason. Can’t wait for the next one!!!!!!

I have a very vivid picture of what’s going on in my head and it is very well written with humor as well. I find it’s harder to read this book at night when I’m alone, and this is how I know how deep I’m into the storyline. ORDER THIS NOW!!!Ok, here we go.. This is my first time leaving a review on a book/author after owning a Kindle for 7 years. I can’t explain how excited I am that I have stumbled across this writer. What luck! This story/series (I have read the first two), are what make you stay up too late, ignore chores, or hurry to get your “adulting” out of the way so you can pick your Kindle back up.FINALLY.. A story with spirits that allows the spirits themselves to have a voice! It adds such a different dynamic. And Shane. He’s the kind of guy you’re warned to stay away from, yet you’re drawn to.I am amazed at how Mr. Ripley comes up with the story lines. I just simply can’t get enough! And to find out he has many other books that I will get to the pleasure to read is the icing on the cake! I am at a loss as to how this writer is not more well known. Cheers to you, Ron Ripley!

Oh god, this book gave me chills!! I couldn’t read it at night as the very first night I did, I ended up with vivid dreams and was jumping at every noise!!Shane has finally moved back into the house of his childhood, not that he wanted to but necessity to find his parents made him. You see, the house is haunted and Shane had never intended on coming back, but the house didn’t want him to stay away and so made his parents disappear! Can he find the answers before it’s too late, or will the house swallow him whole too?Poor Shane. What a childhood he had!! The story is told in flashbacks to his youth and to the present, so we see the whole picture slowly unravel! I have to say that when I was a kid, I wouldn’t have been so brave as Shane and would have run screaming and crying and never return to that hell hole!!Character wise, I loved Shane. He is resigned to the fact that he will have to explore the house in order to get answers, but worst of all is that he will have to enter the dreaded cellar, where the darkest spirits lay!! Despite him being so scared, I admired his willingness to do what was needed to get the answers.I also loved the detective who comes to investigate Shane in the disappearance of his aunt and uncle. She saw some weird stuff but wanted to help Shane solve the mystery. I also loved seeing their friendship grow!! (Hopefully becoming more ;))Anyway, this book was incredibly creepy but totally captivating! It gave me chills, had me hiding behind my pillow and checking every noise I heard in my house! It would make a brilliant TV episode! This narrator definitely knows how to scare his readers and I can’t wait to read more from him!Thom Bowers was impressive in this. He knew when to amp up the tension and when to bring the story to the next gear. My heart was racing at times listening to it!! Thoroughly enjoyed his narration and this story. I have the Audiobooks edition of this book, which was not among the choices on Goodreads. I was given this book for free in exchange for a review. That did not prevent me from enjoying it though. Ron Ripley knows how to write ghost stories. This is my second experience with his writing and I have loved them both. In Berkley Street, Shane Ryan inherits an old rambling house when his parents disappear. He once lived in the house as a child and became acquainted with some of the house’s “other” residents. The book moves back and forth from Shane’s childhood in the house to the present day when he returns as an adult. The creepiness slowly grows as we get further into the book, reaching a hair-raising climax as Shane finally faces the girl in the pond, who has been driving the events for years.Mr. Ripley is one of the few ghost story writers who understands that not all ghosts are mean and evil. They aren’t Casper by any stretch of the imagination, but they are not looking to bring harm to the still living either. This makes for a more compelling read. Four solid stars.

Shane is on deserted island with a lighthouse and many different ghosts, some mean and others likeable. So Shane’s back but this time he is dealing with something even worse!! He is asked to help with a haunted lighthouse, which seems easy enough, but it’s anything but. This island is riddled with the dead. What could possibly happen to Shane on a remote island filled with the dead?? 😉 Well, read it to see!!!!Here’s me thinking that Berkley Street was scary, well welcome to The Lighthouse!! A place that is so captivating, you won’t want to leave, well Dorothy doesn’t give you much choice!! If you enter her domain, you are there to stay. When Shane gets there, he realises the scope of the problem, but he knows that he will only be there a day or two and some one will check on him, when no one does though, and two couples wind up washed ashore, Shane sees that there is more going on than meets the eye. With people being killed, can Shane figure things out before it’s too late!!Shane is just as awesome as the first book! He visits the Lighthouse as a favour to Detective Lafontaine, otherwise he would have stayed away!! He really grows as a character in this book, he is brave, selfless and does what he needs to in order to survive and help others. In all, this was terrifying!! Dorothy was truly evil!! Finding out what she was like when she was alive was heartbreaking, but pales in comparison to what she does when she is dead! Lighthouses can be creepy places at the best of times, but add in lots of ghosts, and you have a chilling tale that will leave you wanting to sleep with the lights on.Thom Bowers really knows how to bring a terrifying tale to life. He ramps up the tension when needed and did a great job with the atmosphere. Really enjoyed his narration and need to check out more from him.*I received a free copy of this but voluntarily reviewed it. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.*

Here’s me thinking that The Lighthouse was Shane’s toughest job yet, but it’s nothing compared to this!! Shane and his girlfriend decide to take a break by visiting an old New England town. They have heard the gossip, “The legend of Abel Latham” but decide to go see anyway. What starts out as a hike, soon becomes a matter of life and death! This has to be the absolute baddest ghost I’ve read so far!! Abel Latham enjoys torturing his victims and even keeps part of them in his “lair”. He let’s his victims go in the woods and then huts them down. When Shane comes to Griswald, he is confronted with the ghost of a boy and his dog. They explain who Abel is and that there is no escape. The town is not only home to Abel, but also to his many, many victims.Ron Ripley has never failed to deliver anything other than an incredibly scary and addicting read. This one is a lot bloodier, a lot messier, a lot scarier and a lot sadder than the previous two. Shane has to deal with an egotistical and insane ghostly serial killer, but also his two “best friends”. I really thought that Shane wasn’t going to come out on top this time, and truth be told, he doesn’t, but I’m not going to say in what way because it’s a spoiler ;)In all, this was such a scary read. It gave me plenty of chills and spooked me a lot. The plot was well done and well written and I devoured the book. I loved how the author made a reference to his other series too, (which I really need to catch up on because it seems like something major happened in it!!) . Anyway, a suspenseful, creepy, fast paced and exciting read, this series is a must read!! I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with next.Again, Thom Bowers brings this book to life. He really brings the atmosphere and spookiness alive and knows how to tell the story properly. I highly recommend you check him out.*I received this for free but voluntarily reviewed it. Imagine your house has long past, and an even longer memory. Shane was still in grade school when he first laid eyes on 125 Berkeley Street. Screams, secret passages, the shadow of something that seems dead set on his destruction have haunted him ever since. Now he’s all grown up and back to get to the bottom of the mystery surrounding his childhood home.

Berkley Street draws you in in the first five minutes. The main character is Shane Ryan and boy does he have an interesting, scary life! He returns to his very haunted childhood home to try and find his missing parents. There are quite a few old ‘friends’ still there. I won’t say more about that.Ron’s characters are always endearing and you want to get right in there with them. The ghosts are mean and ugly and scary and just horrible in every kind of way. There are lots of intense confrontations described in detail. I’ve never read a book by Ron that I didn’t enjoy. I’m an old school Stephen King fan and can honestly say Ron’s writing is comparable to King. I’ve been up reading into the wee hours. I’m only able to do this because my dog is right beside me! Otherwise I’d too scared!Berkley Street is a fantastic read! This is a stand-alone book, but, I’m sure when you finish it, you’ll immediately want to start Book 2 (The Lighthouse). I’m already reading Sanford Hospital (Book 4) of the series – sneaking every single moment I can! Read Berkley Street. I promise a scary ride!

I am still reading Ron’s “Moving series” (I took a break because I seemed to have lost interest in that series). I started reading this series after a short hiatus from Ron.It was an OK book. It definitely could have been better. There were quite a few scares and “sh*t my pants” moments but over all, I came out feeling that not much was explained. Don’t get me wrong…Ron explains quite a bit about the history of the house however, I left feeling that it was not enough. For example, there were a number of ghosts that befriended Shane however the book concentrated on the German ghost. Who was that skeleton that beat the snot out of Shane when he was younger? And why did the skeleton remove every single hair follicle from his body? I mean, he is totally hairless and there is no explanation as to why the evil skeleton did that! Frustrating!!Probably the most annoying and frustrating unexplained moment was when Shane was able to beat up the Pond Girl in her bedroom. How did he get the abilities to beat a ghost up? He had no protection what so ever. Also, I didn’t like the depressed, alcoholic hero Shane portrayed. His one word sentences and matter-of-fact conversations with the other characters made me want to beat him up.Proofreading is a MUST! Come on…there were spelling and grammar mistakes! And instead of saying Shane Said, the writer accidentally wrote Mr. Shane said. Pathetic.I’m curious as to why there are similarities to this and the River Series by Michael Richan. I love that series and to see the similarities is a bit disturbing.I will read the other books in this series but I am not going to hold my breath…

Something is wrong with the old Andersen house. Really, really, wrong. Shane Ryan grew up there. Now he has returned to his childhood home, 20 years after the disappearance of his parents, to find out exactly what happened all those years ago. He might not like what he finds. Many secrets and ghosts from the past will need to be brought to light in order to unravel the mystery. If you are looking for a slow burn haunted house tale, then Berkley Street Is not your huckleberry. There is zero pussyfooting around with this one. The spirits are restless and they are in your face from the beginning. I dug that about this one. The characters, both alive and spirit, were well drawn and the story moves quickly with several genuinely creepy moments. The audio for BS was very well done. I wasn’t too sure about the narrator at first, but once I got used to the cadence and tone, it fit the story and I ended up liking it very much. Listening versus reading is sometimes a difficult thing, but no matter the format of this one, I believe that I would have enjoyed it equally. 3.5+ Stars**”I received a complimentary audiobook edition of this title from the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review and this was it.”**

I received the Audiobooks version of this book as a gift. It is the third in a series of very spooky stories of hauntings. The main character in these books is one Shane Ryan, a 40-something ex marine who seems to somehow keep getting caught up in the ghostly happenings in and around his home town of Griswold, New Hampshire. In this book, Shane and his reluctant allies face down an evil spirit who has a fetish for torturing his victims by carving deep cuts into the soles of their feet before killing them in particularly grisly manners, including his own children. The interesting thing about this series is that the author uses various legendary “ghostbusting” techniques and tools to defeat the evil and save the day. Ghost stories are as old as fiction itself but these stories are fresh and unique enough to warrant a read. I highly recommend them.

I’ve been reading Ron Rickey’s books for a little over a year now and I’ve reached the point where I’m going to have to wait in between novels! I started with the Moving In series and now am finishing up the latest installment of his Berkeley Street series. When I first began reading Ripley’s novels, I was a little annoyed by the fact that the books were around 100 and change pages with a plot line continued through all three books of the “trilogy.” But as his skill matured, the books in his series are complete novels from beginning to end.Ripleys style is different from most horror stories in that he provides a complete world with characters who interact with each other and bring their own histories which creates unique situations in the plot line.In addition, they don’t follow one of the various common plot lines found in most horror fiction. His characters don’t tend to be victims. (Not that they all survive.)In this book, an abandoned prison is bought by two brothers who wish to renovate the place and create a resort, using the architecture of the prison as a base for the hotel. Before the renovation even begins, one of the brothers becomes convinced that the building is haunted by malevolent spirits. He calls in a team of ghost hunters. This team is basically comprised of two or three men who have learned various techniques which enable them to remove the spirits. They aren’t typical crystal-wearing new age earth children; they come from the millitary where they were specialists specifically trained for hot and heavy action. From these different backgrounds and their post-service careers they each have their own reasons for choosing this as their career. The result of all this is that the books all end with a victory. Usually they also involve horrific scenes of out of control spirits and tend to require at least one sacrifice before they are resolved. In this particular book of the series the horror curls your toes and the sacrifice brings tears to your eyes. It also leaves you wanting more books to be written in the series.

Any author that gets me emotionally invested in the book is very good. I like Shane and Courtney together. This book had me wanting to keep reading but afraid to continue because I worried about some of the characters. I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone but I found the ending was sad and I was hoping that it was like some DVD movies where there are alternate endings. The only thing I didn’t like about this book was that it kept mentioning another case that Shane worked to expel ghosts so I thought I missed book number 2.5 but there wasn’t one. I feel like I’m missing something.

The LighthouseBy: Ron RipleyGenre: HorrorShane Ryan is a ghost hunter, by default. In book one of this series, Berkley Street, Shane moved back into his childhood and had to face—and conquer—the myriad ghosts there. In The Lighthouse, Shane is doing a favor for a friend. He maroons himself on a small island inhabited by a Lighthouse…and hundreds of ghosts. It’s his job to find out what they all want…and to stop the killing.I recently bought this book on AUDIBLE. It’s Ron Ripley’s first book in this series, Berkley Street, and I fell in love with this character, Shane Ryan. I am STILL in love with this character. Shane is a deeply troubled guy with a wildly horrific past. He can be cruel and violent. Angry and resentful. Yet, he’s also witty and kind and personable. He’s romantic and caring. In other words, he’s a fully developed person. When reading about Shane, because of the author’s writing skill, I feel like I’m peeking into the life of a real person.I really enjoy Mr. Ripley’s writing. His story lines are exciting and dreadful—just as they should be—while not being overly gory or gross. There is tension within the story that keeps the reader on the edge of the seat.Dorothy, the evil ghost of a truly hideous human being, is frighteningly wicked. The things she was capable of while living—and now dead—are just horrible. You the reader love to hate her. This is a fun read.My favorite author is Stephen King. Mr. Ripley’s work reminds me, a little, of Mr. King’s early work. That’s a big compliment in my world.Looking forward to the next book in this series, The Town of Griswold. PLUS, I’ve just discovered that Mr. Ripley has MANY other books to read. I’m in heaven!

I listened to the Audiobooks edition of this book. It was a gift in exchange for a review. I listened to this one after Number 3, so it was a bit out of sequence. That did not lessen my enjoyment of the book however. It could work as a stand-alone but there are references to events and characters in the first book of the series. As with the other books in the series, there is gore and violence in the story. Ripley’s ghosts do not kill gently or with mercy. The killings are brutal and often bloody, but this is, after all, a horror story.I am enjoying the audio versions of these stories. The narrator is very good with regional accents and voice inflections. This adds to the story.I would recommend this series to anyone who likes a good ghost story or horror in general. They make you want more of it and that’s what a series is supposed to do.

Berkley Street (Book 1)By: Ron RipleyGenre: HorrorShane Ryan is a retired marine who just moved back into his family home, the place he grew up in as a child. Unlike your typical two story Victorian, this one is full of ghosts, demons and devils and always has been. Shane’s childhood was traumatic and horrific. Now, as a grown adult, he must face those ghosts to find out what happened to his parents who disappeared in the house 20 years ago.Horror is my genre of choice. I love to be scared. The cover of, and the description of Berkley Street intrigued me. I am SO GLAD I chose it!Great read! Scary, suspenseful, mysterious and just plain icky! I loved it!Ron Ripley is a very talented writer. While reading one scene—one in which tiny little demon-like things drag a naked man down the hallway of the Berkley Street house, and past the open doorway of the room in which Shane sits terrified and watching, presumably to eat him or torture him or whatever—I found myself scared out of my wits and shaking. That scene lasted all of a page and a ½…maybe! TERRIFIED ME!Shane is a great character. As a child, he was faced with these demons and ghosts on a nightly basis—although his parents didn’t believe his stories—and still turned out to be a great guy. He’s witty and fun and well rounded. He’s hard when he must be but, would prefer to be gentle and kind. He’s my kind of hero. The antagonist of the story is the ghost of a little girl. She is one terrifying little hag. You can’t help but hate her!Other characters include two ghost children just looking for playmates, a Nazi soldier who can be incredibly kind and inhumanly cruel at the same time; and terrifying ghost of an old man so filled with hate that he scares Shane even as an adult. There’s also a kind and benevolent skeleton who plays the violin. They all make up a heck of a story!I recommend it highly to anyone enjoys being scared. I bought this book through Audible. I would also HIGHLY recommend readers buy the version that you can listen to. I listened to while at the gym. More than once I had to stop my exercises just to shudder! Scary stuff!

I loved how simple the horror is in this series. As always, it’s not overdone or complex or confusing. It’s simple and yet there’s always a new twist to it with each book in this series. The twists keep it inventive and new so I don’t get bored with the same old thing. New characters have always been added and, as usual, I like them. Brother Francis is the new main character and he rocks! There were times I got seriously angry though. The nurse was so horrible and the people following her were just as bad. I couldn’t believe there were living people who believed she was in the right! It made me so mad because it was obvious to me that she was just killing people left and right with no real regard to their pain and suffering. If I’m being honest, I was also a bit scared sometimes. It takes a lot to actually frighten me with a book because I know it’s not real etc. I don’t mean I got scared in that sense. I mean that I was scared for Shane. I was worried this ghost would prove to be too much for him and he’d die. And I felt sooo bad for Shane. He’s falling apart and I find it so sad. I hope he rallies and gets better or he’s going to drink himself into an early grave. 🙁

Ron Ripley definitely won on the setting!! Sanford Hospital is ” A Victorianesque monstrosity with creeping ivy” and it’s where Shane is being sent for burn treatment following the events of the last book. It’s home to more than the patients as Shane soon finds out. The infamous Ward E is home to a nurse who is only too happy to help you pass into the after life. It’s up to Shane and a few of his new friends to try to get Nurse Williamson to stay dead, though this may be his toughest fight yet because it’s not just the dead that are helping the Nurse, she has some fanatical living beings helping her too. Shane knows how to fight the dead, but it’s the living who he needs to fear.Even when he is down, poor Shane doesn’t get a break!! He is trying to recover from the burns he received last time and is sent to this creepy hospital with no other choice than to get the treatment he needs. He is nursing his wounds and his broken heart yet trouble still finds him there! He not only has to deal with the multitude of ghosts, but also the humans who are helping her. He really has a tough time with this one and has a lot more injuries that he will need to recover from now ;)As I said, the setting for this was awesome. An old hospital is creepy enough, but add in the fresh hell that is Nurse Ruth and you have an eerie, creepy place. Nurse Ruth was horrible. When she thinks your time is up, it’s up. She kills indiscriminately, though she likes to think that she does it to ease their suffering. She has been doing it for decades and has a core group of both ghosts and humans who follow her. She is a force to be reckoned with!!In all, this edition was just as good as the rest. Shane is on the edge and I really hope he rallies both his fighting spirit and health and comes out on top. I feel like poor Shane can’t handle much more without breaking!!!! Bring on the next one.Thom Bowers did an amazing job. He just seems to “get” these books and knows how to read it well. He is easy to listen to and I really need to check out more from him.I was voluntarily provided this free copy by the author, narrator, or publisher. I usually don’t like ghost stories. I don’t believe in them, and usually avoid books with them in it. But Ron Ripley has a winner in this book. He has developed the characters, both living and dead, with such skill that I got to know them all and was 100% invested in the tale. The book reaches a happy ending very believably. Already downloaded and am reading Book 2.

The Town of GriswoldBy: Ron RipleyThe Town of Griswold is a lovely, but deserted old New England town that retired marine Shane Ryan and his girlfriend Courtney stumble upon and decide to explore. Little do they know that the town isn’t quite as deserted as it seems. Abel Latham a serial killer with a penchant for feet (ew!)—a man so low as to kill his own children—stalks the Town of Griswold torturing and killing any hapless tourists who happen to stop by. The police can’t catch him…mainly because he’s dead! It’s up to Shane Ryan to put an end to this evil, once and for all.Shane Ryan, ghost hunter extraordinaire is fast becoming one of my favorite characters. He has an out-of-this-world collection of room-mates and an improbable career and an unimaginable physical ailment (Alopecia) that does not get him down. His life is sooo implausible! But, he is written so well—with humor, wit, fears and foibles—that he seems completely tangible to me. I think I’m in love with Shane Ryan (but, don’t tell my husband!)Abel Latham, too, is written so incredibly well he gave me chills. He was an evil man in life and a demon in death. He scared me to pieces.I love author Ron Ripley’s work. He isn’t as wordy as Stephen King and/or Dean Koontz, but he IS in that same class for me. He’s scary with a touch of humor. Hard to pull off for others, but not Mr. Ripley.I would recommend this (and all Ripley books) to those who like to be a little frightened in the middle of the night!

I like this series, in fact almost everything by this author. I am getting tired of this and other authors making a simple mistake in action sequences, however: Glocks don’t have a safety that you ‘click’ off. They have a firing pin safety inside that keeps it from discharging when dropped, and a dual trigger so your finger has to be fully seated on the trigger and pulled in order for the firing pin to be released. There is no switch so it makes me want to scream when a character switches this non-existent safety “off.” If you need that bit for whatever reason, choose a gun that actually has one.

So, I really enjoyed the first book, once I started reading the next one, I was pretty disappointed. It appears that at some point between the first and second book, there was a bunch of character development, even stories that were just never really covered between the two.Somehow Shane has become a part time ghost hunter, he’s learning the trade and we aren’t really told anything about it.He had a relationship going with a character from the previous book and it’s never properly explained. The dark ones in the fruit celler are never discussed again. They don’t even expand on Shane’s parents more. All of this is absurd. It’s like the writer didn’t want to go to thr trouble of actually explaining Shane’s character growth. Instead they just kind of throw it at you with no real explanations at all.Sloppy writing at best.

This was without a doubt, the best in the series so far!! Again, I loved the setting and it was much scarier and creepier than the last few.So this one takes place in Gaiman, New Hampshire. Shane, Frank and Mason are called in to help the town after the new owners of the abandoned Kurkow Prison, unwittingly release a horde of angry and vengeful ghosts on the town. Well, Shane did warn them not to but Pete and Ollie didn’t listen, now the town and it’s residents are under attack and Shane has to figure out a way to get the ghosts back to Kurkow Prison and under lock and key again, whilst trying to find out what happened and battling a storm at the same time. This series just keeps going from strength to strength! Ron Ripley has upped his game with this one and given us one hell of a ride. Poor Shane has so much to deal with and thinks the job he initially takes will be easy, but it’s not. There is so many secrets and lies that it will take Shane, Frank and Mason and their combined abilities to get out of this alive. The plot was fast paced, creepy, bloody and addicting and I loved it!!! Also, I don’t want to say too much but I’m intrigued to see what will happen to Courtney!!In all, a brilliant addition to a equally brilliant series. I love these characters and have loved each of the settings of the books, I can’t wait to see where else these characters will go. Bring on the next one ;)I don’t think I can see anyone else reading these stories as Thom Bowers has it down. He knows how to tell these books to make them creepier and come alive. I definitely need to see if he narrates any other books.I was voluntarily provided this free copy by the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

I’ve been reading through the Berkley books the last few days and while they started off fairly fresh, the more I read, the staler they got. Each book is pretty much the same thing. Shane has a problem that involves ghosts and he takes care of them in almost the same fashion as he always does.Through the books Shane’s character continues to regress, he starts off as a likeable character and slowly becomes an alcoholic thug you wouldn’t want to let in your house. The books all follow the same formula and as a result, the longer the books goe, the less entertaining they become.Glad I read a majority of these for free through Prime or I’d be mighty disappointed.

I’ve been following this series from book 1 and am totally hooked. Ripkey’s take on haunted buildings is unusual and quite addictive.Throughout the “history” of the boooks, we’ve been introduced to various characters, changing and adding protagonists who are very unique, likeable and interesting. Characters are fully “fleshed” (or unfleshed) and include the quick and the dead – sometimes metamorphosing from the former to the latter.Ridley uses traditional sources for his supernatural world and shows a depth of research I find very fulfilling, This particular book includes some fairly new characters which I am glad to see incorporated into his canon; it also brings back a couple of his oldest characters.Since, as I said before, all of his characters are very interesting (including their weaknesses as well as their strengths) this is a pleasant reprise.I only hope Ripley keeps churning them out quickly enough to keep me from being strung out!

Another awesome installment in the Bekley Street Series. I seriously can’t get enough of these books and reading this one suddenly made me want to go back and reread the whole series again. The things that had started to get repetitive before were lessened this time around so there was less of the blah blah blah back story that readers are all probably pretty familiar with (unless you’ve just come into the series with this book in which case you NEED to go back to the first book – Berkley Street – because it is AWESOME!).Ron Ripley has managed yet again to add in new twists and new details to keep the series fresh and alive…or dead…depending on which side (ghost or living people) you’re looking at. I’ve been reading this series with the audiobooks and the narrator has continually sucked me into the story so well that I can see it in my head even though I’m staring at jigsaw puzzles. I don’t remember the puzzle pictures but I remember seeing ghosts beating a house down and dead women hanging from the ceiling. :OI was so worried Shane wouldn’t make it this time. These books seem to get closer and closer to knocking him off. The gore was kept to a minimum but was pretty icky when it came. I was shocked at how cowardly some people were and at how little they cared about others. I wish I could say those personalities don’t exist but I know they do.

I received a complementary copy of the Audiobooks.com version of this book. While it has many of the same elements as the first three books in this series, the story moves along at a good pace and kept me interested. Sanford Hospital is an old VA hospital where Shane Ryan, the protagonist in the series, is supposed to receive a skin graft for the burns he suffered in Book #3. Of course, there are ghosts afoot, but this time they have human allies to assist with their evil undertakings. This fact puts an entirely new level of complications into the mix for Shane. He does manage to enlist the help of a few fellow veterans and one or two others from the human realm and beyond. One might think that these books would become stale and trite but they do not do so. True, there are evil spirits and the victims of same in every book so far, but the author manages to maintain the reader’s interest in spite of it all. I found the audio version of the book especially enjoyable because the narrator has the skill of language nuances that give each character a unique personality.

I was gifted this book as an Audiobook.com edition. This is the fifth in the Berkley Street series and the author can still find fresh material to use to continue the saga. In this case, it is an abandoned prison that was the scene of a horrific chemical accident in 1974 that killed both inmates and guards. The property is purchased by two brothers with more money than sense. One of them cuts the iron chains holding the gates together and the horror begins. The ghosts invade the nearby town, which was once the “company town” of the prison when it was in operation. Of course, Shane Ryan and his partners are called in to clean up the mess after a team of amateur ghost finders are hired to spend the night inside the haunted prison – with a predictable outcome.By this time in the series, the reader pretty much knows what the ending will be – Shane will defeat the ghosts and live to fight another day, or another book as the case may be. The audio version includes bonus scenes at the end that fill in the gaps and give the reader some sense of the story that isn’t necessarily presented in the main text. All in all, this is a good, not great, series. I enjoy them and even though the main character, Shane Ryan, isn’t always a likable fellow, I keep pulling for him. He hangs in there, although if it were me, I would have moved to Key West about three books ago.

This wasn’t the best book of the series. Just too “slasher” for my tastes. I like stories that make you wonder if something like that could actually happen. This was not one of those stories. I kept waiting for “Jason” to enter the scene. I’m on book 7 of the series at the moment. I do recommend the series if you like spooky books where the story moves along. I like Ripley’s style of writing. He describes things well enough to paint a picture in your imagination without running on and on with useless mundane details.

The ocean, a lighthouse and ghosts. What can be scarier? Trapped with no sign of rescue and killer ghosts all around. This story is scary with some hints of reality to it. It is so easy to get sucked into the plot. This author is so good you loose track of time while reading his books.

While I was left with a few questions (mostly on Mr. Anderson and the final fate of Carl and the others) I enjoyed this read. Ripley sets up a great atmosphere for the house and takes a few surprising turns along the way. It’s a short book and leaves you wanting more of it. The bonus chapters spread a little light but I did want more explanation.

My favorite genre is the classic Gothic haunted house novel. Yet, unfortunately, most are the same basic plot – family moves into a house in the country, ghosts happen, family members turn against each other….blah blah blah. Berkley Street, however, is different – refreshingly so. Yes there are ghosts, but they work more like characters than objects. Some are good, some are bad, some are scared of each other. My only complaint is that there are a few threads that aren’t tied up as nicely as I would’ve liked, but overall, an exceptional Gothic horror story worth reading. I was so impressed, I picked up the next 2 books by Ron Ripley.

I like this series so much that I have both the Kindle and five of the audio versions. I first read the Moving In series and enjoyed those books so much that when I tried the first Berkley street I was hooked. I like the way that Shane will go to Brian and Jennifer (?) for their experience and resources. I also enjoy the bonus chapters at the end of each book that provides some background on the characters that live in Shane’s house. My main problem is with how Courtney is being dealt with. I know Shane feels some guilt what happened to her in Griswold. But I think if he truly loves her he will want to give her peace. She is not at peace. Courtney was a few steps away from some mental health issues when she was alive and now that she is a ghost she has become quite insane. It will only be a matter of time until she harms either Shane or someone else close to him. Courtney loves Shane but at the same time she is obsessed with him and she wants to possess him. That’s not a good kind of love. Overall it is a great series and I look forward to the next installment. I have to add that in the audio book versions the narrator Thom Bowers does an excellent job, Thank you Mr. Ripley!.

Have you ever met someone who talks about themselves in the third person? It almost felt like that.Shane opens his eyes. Shane gets out of bed. Shane goes for a walk.I felt like I was reading one of the old dick and Jane books but with ghosts. The parents come in his room in a flashback and are referred to as ” Shane’s mom ” and ” Shane’s dad” a dozen times and with their first names to each other in every line of dialog.I found it super distracting and annoyed me to the point I stopped reading. Which was disappointing because the reviews say this is a great scary story which I am always looking for

Awesome. Just awesome. It’s amazing how many injuries Shane can sustain and still keep ticking! He’s no longer super depressed, thank goodness. His depression and drinking made it difficult to keep reading at times before. But now he seems to be on the mend…emotionally speaking. Yay! Except I doubt people would say he’s still handsome when he’s missing bits and pieces and chunks of himself. Yowzahs!I loved the bonus story about Patience. Throughout the whole book I had been wondering about her character and was a bit disappointed not to have gotten her back story…until I started reading the bonus chapters. It was a satisfying background but I was still wanting more. I mean, they mention the Reverend more than once in a way that made me think he was important but he wasn’t.And then in the story itself there’s the unfinished business with the Englishman and The Woman. Who is she? What’s going on at Lake Nutaq? I really hope these questions are answered at some point. I want to know!!!

I was gifted the Audible.com version of this book. This is the sixth in the Berkley Street series featuring Shane Ryan as ghost killer extraordinaire. In this story, Shane is recovering from injuries and exhaustion sustained in his last adventure and decides to take a drive to clear his head – without his iron and salt. He gets caught in a blizzard and holes up in a cabin on Lake Nutaq. This is when the fun begins. Of course, there will be ghosts and this time they are native Americans, plus one very unusual Caucasian girl. Not only that, but this time the evil is found not only in the ghosts but also in some very much alive people. While Shane attempts to remain alive in the midst of the ghostly presence on the lake, his friends are attempting to find him. These threads form the basis of the plot. One might think that this series would become tiresome after six books but the author manages to keep the storylines fresh enough to maintain the reader’s interest, at least it did for me. Also, the audible narration adds a whole new level of interest. The narrator reads the dialogues in various inflections and accents and doesn’t simply read them in the same voice. These books are not long but there is plenty of meat in the pages. I recommend this series to anyone who likes horror or supernatural fiction.

I think I keep saying it with each addition to the series, but this has to be my favourite so far!! Shane is in way over his head here!!So this one sees Shane set out from his house to clear his head, but he ends up stuck in a snow storm and stranded on Lake Nutaq. Things here are bad! Shane finds himself in the midst of an army of ghosts, lead by Broken Nose. Shane doesn’t have any of his gear, nor a way to contact anyone. How will he get out of it this time??How much more can Shane take? He is battered and bruised, and missing pieces of himself, but he still fights, and that’s why I love this series so much. He is just so strong and brave and selfless. He seems to be getting emotionally better and stronger and just all round awesomer ;)I love the authors ability to create memorable settings and even more memorable ghosts. Patience and Broken Nose were some of the worst! I also love seeing the flash back scenes and getting to know more on how the ghosts came to be.This series is one of my favourites. The author never fails to grab my attention and give me chills. Each book is better than the previous ones and each leaves me wanting more. I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for Shane next!Thom Bowers really knows how to capture the essence of the story and knows how to bring the scariness and spookiness to life. He has also portrayed Shane perfectly. He brings across Shane’s personality really well and always keeps me entertained.I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator, or publisher. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.

SHANE RYAN IS MY HERO!I love this series from Ron Ripley. The Berkley Street Series has become my new obsession! This time, Shane and Frank are tasked with the job of clearing out not only Kurkow Prison but the nearby, small town of Gaimen, New Hampshire! That’s where the DEAD inmates and guards of Kurkow escape to when the STUPID new owner of the prison cuts the iron chains that hold them in Kurkow. Once free, the ghosts begin a murder, rape and terror campaign on the town that only Shane and Frank can stop. This story–like all the other Berkley Street books–is filled with graphic violence. Be prepared future reader. It’s also filled with wit, humor, and all those things that make it a fun read. Don’t miss this one!

I really enjoy Ron Ripley’s stories! The Berkley Street series of which Sandford Hospital is book 4 is remarkable.Shane Ryan is amazing! He is courageous, witty, humble and kind and yet still has the rock hard, razor sharp, killer instinct and ability that he makes an extremely entertaining hero!In Sandford Hospital a certain evil–a “merciful” spirit–an angel of death–or rather the ghost of an angel of death, is murdering veterans whom she decides are too ill, too alone or too inconsequential to live. She is helped by both the living and the dead who share her mission. Shane, recently admitted to the hospital for treatment of burns to his body (a leftover from his last battle with the dead) finds himself in a war to save those veterans and others from the the nurse and all of her goons. He is helped by several of the other hospital patients and his new friend, Dom Francis, a Catholic Monk who wasn’t always so spiritual. “Frank” has a violent past as a warrior who has done his fair share of killing. He and Shane come together to save Sandford Hospital. The angel of death has her hands full when these two avenging angels come to call.Ron Ripley’s writing is skillful and imaginative. His characters are well developed and well drawn. I can both “see” and “know” them. I understand their motivations, their strengths, their weaknesses and their hearts. Ripley’s ability to make them “real” is enviable. I very much admire his talent. This story has a bit of a back-burner mystery (I won’t give it away) and I really enjoyed it. The rest is Shane Ryan being Shane Ryan and I love that.

I just finished The Lighthouse, book 2 in the Berkley St. Series and it scared me as badly as book 1 did. The stories are so scary that I will remember certain parts for days on end Ripley gives you just enough detail that I feel as if I am seeing it all first hand. These are not for the ” faint of heart” they are great stories but very scary and I can’t wait to start book 3. I have read every book the the Berkley St series as well as the Moving In series. When a new book comes out, I’m always weary about reading it, afraid it won’t be as good as the previous books. I have yet to be disappointed. I’m not sure where Ron Ripley comes up with these ideas, but I’m addicted to the stories. I’ve read the entire Berkeley Street series, as well as the Moving In series, and I think this was definitely one of the better offerings. This time, former Marine Shane and his slowly growing band of willing (and unwilling) allies face their biggest challenge yet. While the ghosts of Borgin Keep are both very dangerous and very evil, Shane also must keep one step ahead of The Watchers, a ruthless and powerful organization who find him to be a threat to their shadowy goals. As always, for me the best part are the characters. Shane and his ghost-hunting partner Frank (a former soldier/former monk) are joined once again by police detective Marie LaFontaine, who is a very tough woman determined to avenge a dead friend. I’m not as fond of Shane’s girlfriend Courtney, but I understand her uses as far as character development. This is a great read, but definitely requires reading the rest of the series in order to understand it.

I really like this series and I haven’t been able to say that about any series for a while. I’ve always enjoyed supernatural “ghost” stories and I have found very few writers of that genre that keep me waiting on the edge of my seat for the next installment like Mr. Ripley does. I have all of the books in this series and all of the audiobooks too except for Borgin Keep and I will purchase that one also as soon as it is available. While there is violence in the books it is not like the gore you see in some movies on screen now. The violence is there…but it isn’t the whole story. Shane Ryan is a man whose life has never been normal by todays standards. He lives in his childhood home and it’s haunted by those that have either lived there or come onto the property for one reason or another. Other than the ghosts he has a former monk and special forces dude named Frank that lives with him and goes on his quests, jobs, adventures or whatever they are called. Add to that a Police officer, a former medic who have been known to come to Shane’s aid when needed and another friend named Brian and his wife who also are in the ghost business and you have an exciting series that keeps getting better. Add the Watchers in the mix and Boy-Howdy what a ride! If the story line has one draw back it is Shane’s relationship with former girlfriend/lover Courtney. I don’t know that they ever had a physical relationship but the relationship they have now is both toxic and very sad. I would love to see these books made in to a series for television. I’m not good at writing reviews. I just know what I like and I like these books. I think you all will too.

Ron Ripley’s “Berkley Street” grabs your attention from the first pages. Moving into an unusually haunted house, the protagonist, Shane, exhibits an interesting and compelling mix of courage and vulnerability. At times hero, then victim, Shane faces ghosts and situations from his childhood and the past owners of the home. I think this one was second only to the book that started us – & Shane – on our journeys, “Berkley Street”. That very last scene of Shane in the woods was so touching & bittersweet to me! After all the hellishness he’d just been through & all the not-so-nice things he’d just done, to be so caring to the little ones showed the dichotomy of the man. I swear, sometimes I want to smack that boy silly; other times I want to grab him & hug him & make it all better! One thing, however, bugs me: Why does it seem Shane & Marie can barely tolerate each other in this book? When & for what reasons did they develop such animosity? I feel as though I’ve missed something important.All-in-all, excellent book! I am eagerly awaiting the next in the series. (Cannot wait to see The Watchers get their comeuppance!)

You had to love or hate this genre. For me is LOVE AT 1ST SIGHT….Ron Ripley is one of those writers that could make anything with little or big things. You could feel fear, stress, die of terror, suspense but never being bored.I had other books by Ripley and just began the Berkley Series. I wasn’t disappointed. Me, that hate go and back can’t stop to read and finally know what Shane wants too.The use of few “live” characters in between the lot of “dead ones” are great. So many dead interesting ones…The plot, the characters, the atmosphere, pond, the house even the abuse of alcohol fits like a great puzzle.Ripley is an artist moving and creating that atmosphere of threat that never leaves. Every book I read from him is better and better.I could say many things from the book, but where is the fun in telling that you could read and enjoy?I’m very honest with my Reviews, not only for me, the author or other readers, how an author know when did something good or need improvement? How another reader believe in my review? If I didn’t read the book, I don’t Review. If the book is good, Review. Riple’s writing is getting better. Shane health not so much.Shane still isn’t invincible “super-heroe”, keep his “human traits”. A huge lost for him in this book. He felt, cry, drank, chain-smoke & live most of his life around ghosts. How could he return, help… Suffering PTSD, Depression. Are there ghosts? Can spirits change what we perceive as reality? Can a house physically change its internal structure? This fictional book looks at those three questions and gives the reader a lot of twists and turns. Through flashbacks, the reader gains greater understanding as to the unknowns within the house and how those unknowns haunted the life of one young boy and many adults.

Welcome to the haunted house on Berkley Street, a house that Shane Ryan returns to to try and find his parents who went missing years ago. Little does he know that his aunt and uncle have also gone there as they believe the house should belong to them. Trouble is, they also go missing and Detective Marie Lafontaine thinks Shane has something to do with it. Between them and with the help of a few others they search the secret passages within the walls where the dead lie in wait. This is a brilliant read and I liked the fact that at the end of the book there are bonus chapters which explain how and why the dead are there

Fun with a nice steady pace. This book in my opinion had only one real flaw and that was a forensic visit from the police which ended when nothing was found but lots of strange occurences. BERKLEY STREET is the first novel in the Berkley Street series, by author Ron Ripley. In the house at number 125 Berkley Street, the author has created a most unique and terrifying environment positively riddled with ghosts of different backgrounds and temperaments. Shane Ryan and his parents, Hank and Fiona, buy the house after it had belonged to the Andersons. It doesn’t take long for young Shane and his family to find out what the rest of the neighborhood already suspected–that their house is indeed, very much, haunted to the maximum capacity.”Everything’s impossible until it isn’t . . . “Ron Ripley has created a morbid “fun house” of sorts, filled with macabre spirits, hidden passages, and a house that likes to conveniently change its shape and form impossibly, from the inside.”. . . you can disappear into the walls. Places and rooms which shouldn’t exist, but they do anyway.”Twenty years after the disappearance of his parents, a series of events leads Shane to move back to the house at 125 Berkley Street. On his first day, he meets a neighbor and former Marine, Gerald Beck–a man who has always believed the rumors of Shane’s house to be truth.”. . . there are things which the Good Lord does not rein in. And some of those things are in the root cellar.”Along with the unique atmosphere of this house, Ripley brings us characters–both living and dead–that you’ll come to care about as if they were real people. Each death that occurs there has it’s own special kind of torture, and each spirit trapped there retains their individual personalities. Some, like Carl, are simply grateful to be remembered: “. . . My Oubliette . . . My little place of forgetting. I shall forget he existed, and so shall the world . . . “. Others, like the Lady of the Lake , are still as twisted and sadistic in death as they were in life–more than capable of causing the painful deaths of so many others.”. . . when he fell asleep, he died. They call it dry drowning. A little water in the lungs is enough to kill . . . “Shane is aware of the danger he faces in returning, but his character is so convincingly portrayed that the reader can easily accept that his homecoming was inevitable.I found Berkley Street to be a unique and compelling supernatural horror novel. This was the first book that I’d read by Ron Ripley, and I’ve already purchased another.Recommended!

Have standards in literature fallen this far?I read multiple reviews on Amazon praising this novel for its horror elements. Yet when I finally read the tale, I found it to be quite disappointing and disjointed. I was hoping for something along the lines of an Algernon Blackwood tale. What was delivered could scarcely be mentioned alongside the likes of a Stephen King novella. The writing style was amateurish and juvenile. The characters were vastly underdeveloped and rather one-dimensional. I could not help but feel that this was a draft, not a final product. A grade school reader might enjoy this book, but an adult would find it not very diverting. The novel is short enough to be read in one day, if the reader is so inclined.I, for one, would recommending passing on this book until you are seeking something short and simple for a weekend read or airplane trip.

Berkley Street was interesting. It went just enough to let you know who the main ghosts were and still kept Shane as the lead in this story. I also like having more background on Carl.

This book is so well written I enjoyed every minute of reading it so it frustrates the heck out of me when a book as good as this leads you into the next book and you are forced to buy the others. The characters are well written and it’s easy to follow the story line. Enjoyed very much!!

This is the first book I have read by Ron Ripley, and it was an excellent introduction. The pacing was steady, and he leaves just enough hidden to keep the reader hooked and coming back for more. As always this is another very scary story and of course I read every last word. Hmm, does this make me scary too? Oh well as long as Ripley writes this good, I’ll keep reading and the next one always seems to get better. The details and the involved story lines always keep me on my toes and the almost final battle in this story surprised me completely. Another great Ron Ripley book to keep me awake an few extra hours.

I can’t wait, I begin to read then and there until finished.Ripley, never siezed to amaze me. This book is the “Cherry” of the Pie. It’s all action, hurt, good byes, vengeance and the best…GHOSTS, lots of them. Yeah💕.The characters and plots are better and better they grown up in Ripley’s mind and hands.Won’t stop until I finished the whole book. Ahhh.. you need to read this book and the whole Berkley Street Series. When you found an author like Ripley’s, never go back.I support Indie authors, they make an interesting twist on writing. The Publishers Houses had to be following more of them because they’re are writing incredible stories.I’m very honest with my Reviews, not only for me, the author or other readers, how an author know when did something good or need improvement? How another reader believe in my review? If I didn’t read the book, I don’t Review. If the book is good, Review. If the book isn’t good, Review. With that we all benefit, readers, authors & readers searching for something new or special. My opinions are my own. You can find me at Amazon under: MASTERI

This last book in the series was absolutely fantastic! I loved everything about this book. The characters, the story line, the ghosts, etc… It’s been a thrilling ride and I’m sorry to see it end just as I did the Moving In series. Both Brian Roy and Shane will always have a place in my heart. But as much as I love the paranormal and the troubles it causes for our heroes I also wish them a most deserved happy ending of their own. Ron Ripley is the best writer I’ve come across so far. “Wow” & “damn” are the first two words that come to mind for this last installment of The Berkley Street series. Such a long journey we had with Shane, Frank, Marie, & the inhabitants of number 125! I’m glad it ended with our main cast still breathing. I will also always wonder if The Watchers were looking in the wrong direction for The One. With Shane’s ability to draw upon the energies of “good” ghosts to defeat “bad”, perhaps there was more there than that diabolical organization chose to see.Goodbye, my friends. You will be missed.

I received the Audiobooks.com version of this book as a gift from Scare Street Publications.Slater Mill is the seventh in the Berkley Street Series and this series just keeps getting better and better. Shane Ryan, battered and bruised though he may be, continues to kick ghostly butt only this time he has earned the wrath of a group of living killers who call themselves The Watchers. It seems they have had a hand in haunted happenings in New England for decades and now find Shane and Frank are their biggest obstructions to continuing their evil deeds. This book begins to lay the foundation for a climax that will no doubt occur in Book 9, yet to be released. On top of the horrors of Slater Mill, Shane and Frank must deal with a slowly recovering Courtney, who teeters between her former gentle self and her madwoman self and the return of Jack White, who made his deadly appearance in earlier books.I gave Slater Mill five stars because, quite frankly, I enjoyed it more than the first six books. Those are all excellent reads, but this one has a bit more meat to it, at least in my opinion. It is somewhat darker than some of the earlier books and has a more complex plot as well. If the final two books of this series are as good as this one, I’ll dive in gladly.

I was given a gift of the Audiobooks.com version of this book. Can this series get any creepier? If so, sign me up. In this book, Shane and Company take on their most evil adversary yet – Emmanuel Borgin – who built Borgin Keep many years earlier to imprison individuals who were judged by The Watchers to be, shall we say, less than ideal in their eyes. Borgin Keep is so evil that not even birds fly nearby. Methods of dispatching its inmates are gruesome to say the least. So, in order to continue their quest to finally defeat The Watchers and put an end to the horrors bedeviling New England once and for all, Shane and Frank, joined this time by Marie Lafontaine (the police detective introduced in earlier books), must enter and destroy Borgin Keep. An impossible task according to everyone they know.I keep thinking that Shane must be some sort of superman to survive all that has happened to him in this series. Borgin Keep is no exception. Shane gets beaten up, slammed around and generally abused throughout the book. He probably hopes that the series ends soon, even though I do not,I found this book to be faster paced than earlier books. The only negative I found was that the ending seemed a bit anticlimactic after the graphic violence earlier in the book. The bonus chapters at the end of the book lead directly into the final book, as one might expect. I liked it enough to give it five stars.

Did you see the movie “Mirrors “? The dead trapped in mirrors (here they’re trapped in the walls). Narnia’s portals to other worldly places. The house at 125 Berkley has all of that and more. Horror and mystery with no disagreeable graphic scenes. Why does the little (dead) girl in the pond want everyone to die if they move into the house? Why won’t she let their spirits leave? I’m listening to this series in its Aubile.com iteration. I bought the additional volumes on strength of the first. The first was really entertaining. This second one though – while the voice narration/acting is on par with the first – I’m not sure how it got published.Overflowing with cardboard characters who exhibit lunatic & preposterous behaviors in the face of supernatural adversity, it is patently ludicrous and is so nearly continuously. This has the effect of popping me out of the action again and again with exclamations like “WTF?” and “Oh c’mon!” and “Seriously?”Not to mention it seems to be essentially the same book as the first with minor deviations, less effort and in a different locale.I will push on through as I’ve already paid and hope the series regains some of the promise of the first volume, but I have grave (pun intended) doubts.

Thoroughly entertaining and well written. So many novels these days seem like they were written by grade-school aged authors. This is not one of those. If you like ghost stories you will like this book. My only reason for not giving it a five is because I thought the end came to suddenly and was a little vague. But of course that vagueness is what elevates it

Well, this is the end of this series and, quite frankly, it didn’t end the way I thought it might. It was a bittersweet conclusion to a series that was both compelling and gruesome. The evil entity in “Amherst Burial Ground” is The One – the “Chief Spook” that The Watchers have been seeking for decades. Shane Ryan must face this black spirit alone (with the exception of Courtney) as his living sidekicks recover from various injuries. Whether Shane survives this encounter or not I shall leave to the readers to discover, so no spoilers here.Ron Ripley is a master at delivering frights and this book does not disappoint. There are hired killers, both living and dead, and ancient evils that arise to spread death and destruction to all who enter the realm of The One. Not only must Shane and Company fight ghosts, they must also face assassins and deal with members of The Watchers who try to change allegiances, or are they?I loved this series and will miss not having future episodes to look forward to. It ended about as well as it could have, I suppose, but I felt as though Shane was a friend of mine and now he is going away. I would recommend this book and series to anyone who enjoys horror and the supernatural. Five big stars.

Despite a few instances of clunky writing and a typo or two i really liked this book. I was annoyed by the switching back and forth in time at first, but as the novel went on it stopped bothering me, as they served more as relevant flashbacks. On a side note, I was reading it before bed and had to wake my husband up to go to the bathroom with me in the middle of the night b/c I was so freaked out afterwards.

This book was crazy. It is all over the place and will for sure keep you on your toes. It was a very interesting read and really hard to put down and had an awesome pace that just kept you coming back for more. Anyhow it follows a guy who inherits his parents house. It was a house that he lived in for many years. The story starts there and bounces back and forth to the past when he was a kid. His parents are mia and he is looking for them because they are in the house. That is all I will say because anything else will give stuff away. REally fun book.

I’m one of those readers that doesn’t just see the characters as words on a page, but as friends. I’ve watched Shane go up against unbelievable odds for 9 books now, and have worried about his survival in every one. In Amherst Burial Ground the living are as bad (almost) as the dead. But their organization has never dealt with someone like Shane before, something they may or may not live to regret. Thank you Mr. Ripley, for the way you ended the book and the series. Please don’t forget about Frank. Really, who could forget about Frank?!? Those of us that view these characters, living and dead, as friends would appreciate a short update every now and then. Thank you for adding to my literary family. Please continue to write, I will continue to read! (Carl, mein Freund, wache über sie und halte sie sicher. Vielen Dank.)

Usually I read mysteries/thrillers/spy novels but have just recently gotten into ghost stories — not the really really scary, gory ones but the eerie, creepy ones :-). I’ve tried a lot of ghost stories out there today, and have been pretty disappointed until I came across Ron Ripley. Wow, this first book was a real page turner for me. Great story and characters. The storyline was engrossing and characters well developed. I didn’t have any problem following the backward/forward style; I actually think it was the only way to present the story and it was very well done. I have already downloaded a few others and look forward to some great spooky reads! And kudos to his editor! The characters were interesting especially the marine, Shane. The description of the house with its ever changing layout was delightfully spooky. Ron Ripley is great!! Suspenseful, detailed, clever. One of my favorite authors!! I’ve bought every book he has written and cannot wait for more.

Excellent horror even as a stand alone but I suggest the whole series.

Took me awhile to figure out the lay of the land with your books but once I did I really enjoyed the way the lives came together to set the stage for the next book and the rest to come. Good read.

An excellent free book. Well written, great characters, good story and no long boring parts. Descriptive but not overly detailed.
