Marigold La Roux had a perfectly average existence…until the night her parents tried to murder her.

Barely escaping with her life should have been the end of Marigold’s living nightmare. Unfortunately, it was just the beginning. Her entire world starts shattering. She moves to New Orleans to stay with her only living relative, her aunt Delilah. She believes the bustle of Bourbon Street will help her get a fresh start, but strange things start happening to Marigold at the La Roux estate. Ghostly voices whisper in her ear, sharp knives scrape against her door, and something in the darkness lashes out, leaving deep claw marks on her back.

Hoping to understand her torment, she starts delving into her family’s past and is shocked and appalled by what she discovers. She begins to understand why locals shudder at the mere mention of La Roux house. The attacks against her grow more vicious, ravaging not only her body, but also her mind.

Desperate to end her suffering, Marigold teams up with Louis, an occult enthusiast, who hopes his knowledge of the paranormal can help end her family curse once and for all. But, the dark forces of evil are relentless and their twisted hold runs deep in her blood. They will stop at nothing to get what they want: her life.

I thought this story was well done and a good storyline. Physical attack as much as psycilogical. The first I’ve read from this author and I look forward to more. A steal at a pro-mo price!

I wanted to like this book. It seemed to have a lot of promise. I adore books set in New Orleans. I think this book had potential. There were drawbacks that were hard to ignore. There is almost no background to speak of. I was and am still completely confused about the main character. In the beginning you would assume she was young as she is living with her parents and in the manner they speak to her. Then she travels from there (wherever that is, I was never able to figure that out) to her aunts on her own and seems to have a semi relationship with a man. I also find it odd that she has no money though her family was doctors. And I assume she is an adult but had no job or money of her own. I also found the immediate and constant attacks unbelievable. I truly was confused most of the book. It really stems from a very poor beginning. You couldn’t relate to the main character because you knew almost nothing about her.

A terrific read that kept me glued from the first page to the last. Just proving you can’t choose your family, but to quote another southern belle you can always rely on the kindness of strangers. Great characters and a well put together story. I will read more from this author.

I have to say I felt so sorry for Marigold. She just took beating after beating….this poor young woman!! This book was straightforward and a quick read. You were thrown immediately into the story. I’m actually looking forward to the next installment.

I couldn’t give 4 stars due to no ending! I really dislike being tricked into buying the next book in a series. I normally will not read another story by authors who do this. I haven’t decided about this one yet. A series should be good enough that each book is a stand alone. Such a disappointment from an otherwise very good story.

A good start to a new series of books. Pretty scary and there’s a lot going on in this book. The one flaw for me was the characters didn’t grab me like most of the characters in the Ripley/Scare Street books do. It’s almost like I didn’t really care what was happening to Marigold. Not like what I would feel if the same were happening to Brian Roy or Shane Ryan of the Moving In and Berkeley Street series. I’m hoping that will change going forward.

With no relief from the macabre feeling in this book, I couldn’t wait to get through with it. Rest assured that I won’t be reading anymore of this author’s work, even though the style was strong enough to let this reader know she has potential.

Honestly, this book captivated me from Chapter 1 when Marigold woke up in a bathtub being drowned by her parents. What?!? So many questions…Marigold La Roux may have survived her parent’s attempt on her life but when she moved to New Orleans she was unaware of the horrors that awaited her. Her only living relative may have accepted Marigold into her home but failed to let her in on the ghastly family secret. The story itself is hard to put into words, it was fast paced, engaging and I absolutely wanted more. Make sure when you finish Black Bayou you have Haunted Waterways ready to start.

From the time her parents tried to kill her it seemed like she endured more and more pain and harshness from the world. I felt so sorry for the girl. I became afraid for her. I wanted to know what happened next so I rarely put the book down! Delilah was wretched and Louis was a die hard friend. I’m looking forward to the next book.

I thought there was some not so wonderful reviews on this book to the point that I almost didn’t read it. Boy am I glad that I didn’t listen because it is so very very hard to spook me especially with a book and this book is the creepiest book I have ever read! I read it in one sitting and it was absolutely one of the best horror books I’ve read for a short read and one that really got the chills up and down my spine! I can’t wait to dig right into her next book! Awesome horror/supernatural writer. I certainly hope to see more books from this author with demons and hopefully they will be as good as this one. It is very hard to find a scary book about not just ghosts but a demon that gets me chilled and this one did for once!!! The demon in this book was absolutely relentless to the point where I kept asking myself “how much more can this girl take physically before this thing kills her? ” Thank you so much I had a great time reading your book. Never before was I spooked to go have a smoke outside in the dark from a book until I read this one 🙂 kudos to u on an awesome read. I highly recommend this book if demons are your thing and if u know of any other books besides the obvious ( hill house ect ) that are good books with relentless demons preying on a poor soul as this book does please let me know I am yet to find, except for this book one that gave me a good spook. Thanks so much

I spotted this book while scrolling through an seemingly endless list of titles based on my interests. The cover caught my eye and I was intrigued by the title. I’m always looking for a good old fashioned ghost story and this seemed promising. I read about the book based on similar descriptions, opted to pass it over, having been let down by other books similar to this one. After nearly every book I’d finished or deleted before finishing, I would notice this book in another endless list. Finally, I gave in and downloaded it and the next one in the series and then the final book. I found myself drawn in and held captive by this paranormal thriller.I would compare it to the classic horror of a Lon Chaney or Bella Lagosi movie with modern horror aspect of the conjuring.

I’m a horror buff, I absolutely love the genre though my taste can run a tad to the extreme “the type you wouldn’t tell your momma about”. This book isn’t quite like that but one thing it is is absolutely terrifying. I can’t recall many books that are this freaking scary and I’m no slouch. Clancy has got a gift I can’t wait to see what she can do after she really cuts her teeth. I think she could push it further, maybe knock a couple back with Edward Lee and Matt Shaw and really get down.

Murder, serial killings, mercy killing, ghosts, demon, family legacies, Voodoo, New Orleans, could this story have left any horrors out? Apparently not, as the book did not end with closure. So, its on to Book 2…….

I normally do not bother reading stories under 200 pages because of the lack of time an author has to start telling it before it’s over. But, I gave this one a try because I’m running out of things to read…and was pleasantly surprised!Although this book took only a couple of hours to read, I found that in such a short time, the author does do a good job of character building, and especially of making you care about Marigold (Maggie), the main character. She even manages to hint at what I felt was going to be a little romance going on between her and another main character – even though she cannot pronounce his name to his or his mothers liking. The story itself was unique, which was a plus, as it wasn’t based on any concept I’ve ever seen done in horror before. The setting is New Orleans, and although I’ve never been there, I felt as if I were there when the author described the tastes, smells, sites, people and atmosphere…especially that of Bourbon street.I did get a little lost in the end, for some reason. I don’t think it kept my attention as much as the rest of the book did. The style is so different it almost seems to have been written by someone else. I liked the ens … I just didn’t care for the style in which it was wtitten. However – this book was not all perfection as my biggest complaint is the editing. If it’s one pet peeve I have it’s when someone does not know how to spell “wander.” This author did it not once, not twice, but 3 times using the word “wonder” or “wondering” when the word should be “wander” or “wandering.” When in doubt, look it up. Those are COMPLETELY different words. That’s what dictionaries are for. Author, please look these words up as you read this, or correct the sentences so you see the word does not fit the sentence in the book. There are also other “wrong word errors” in the book such as:1 sentence with silence that should be silent. And…the biggest faux pas due to the (some would say blasphemous) difference in the definitions:1 sentence with the word “domination” that should be “denomination.” Proof that using the correct word is extremely important.A good editor would have caught these things. Only running the document through spell check does not negate the need for an editor, as spell check does not catch these glaring errors.I had to give three stars because I start all off with 5 and knock off stars as I go. I knocked off one for the wrong word errors, and one for the ending. If those were fixed, and the book were longer, it may be worth all 5.

Unbalanced story line that had a teen writing club feeling combined with spelling and grammar errors made this a cringe worthy short story.

There are plenty of terrifying scenes that fans of paranormal horror will definitely enjoy. Add a dash of Voodoo, and Black Bayou is a perfect quick read on a stormy night. However, I couldn’t give this book more than three stars as the lack of exposition and character development really cut into my enjoyment of the story. Although I really liked the writer’s style & use of language, this little novel could have used a good editor.

I really enjoyed this book. It was a fast read. I don’t usually care for short stories. To me less than 200 pages is considered a short story. I will be reading the other two sequels. Sometimes the writing gets a little confused and you can lose your way, but it corrects itself very quickly.

Now this is more like it. The story starts out with an explosive scene and really doesn’t slow down much from there.Events move swiftly after Marigold’s parents tried to drown her in the bath tub. Turns out they had a huge secret. Once it’s exposed, Marigold has to leave town to avoid those who blame her for what her parents did. Her aunt offers to let her come live with her in New Orleans, so off she goes. This is where you’d expect things to slow down a bit while the author gives you some filler. But, it doesn’t. Weird and scary things happen as Marigold travels to New Orleans and keep happening once she gets there. It takes a lot to make my creep-o-meter spike to the red zone. This story had all the bells and whistles I look for in a solid horror story. And I couldn’t have asked for a more genuine main character. Not to mention the setting. New Orleans is popular for vampire and voodoo stories. And it sure worked good for what lurked in the pages here.Kudos to the author for choosing the perfect title and great cover art for her story. It’s what first drew me to this book and the story lives up to its name. Not too long or too short, this story was just right for a late night read. The only hitch, it didn’t really have an ending. A lot of questions were left unanswered. I enjoyed this so much I’ll continue with the series, but leaving me hanging with so much still left open was the one thing that kept if from being a 5 star read.

I didn’t realize this was not a “stand alone” novel when I began it. Very disappointed that the ending left me “hanging.” I hate it when authors do this. There should be a disclaimer stating that the book has a sequel. Will not read more of this author.
