It’s 1940, and the world is lost in the powerful grips of WWII. Daily life in England is incredibly difficult, marked by blackouts, air raids, and the threat of enemy bombs. Yet, in pastoral Duncaster, reporter Rachel Rubin fights an adversary more deadly than the Germans: a foe that only she can see.

  1. Sentinels
  2. The Haunter
  3. The Smog

Book 1: Sentinels

According to local legend, King Redwald’s treasure is in Duncaster and protected by a foul curse. But American reporter Rachel brushes this off as run-of-the-mill nonsense…until she begins having disturbing nightmares, and seeing ghosts herself. Something is oddly chilling, and she must discover the truth before it’s too late.

Book 2: The Haunter

After Rachel’s husband, Tony, inherits a manor, they decide to escape their troubles. Unfortunately, two gruesome events mark their arrival – a death and disappearance. Rachel soon learns of the Beaumont Curse, which ends up being too real and too terrifying to bear.

Book 3: The Smog

Ghost sightings are popping up all over London. And though things are better for Rachel, she knows her interactions with ghosts are far from over. When her daughter begins having nightmares about the “Raggedy Man,” she realizes that this time she has more to lose than her own life.

England at war, a spunky girl reporter, Nazis, buried treasure, a sunken city, ghostly Anglo-Saxon warriors, and if that’s not enough, even the spirit of a long-dead witch—what more could you want? In The Sentinels, David Longhorn heads to M.R. James country to riff on his legend of the three crowns that proved so deadly for the poor amateur archeologist Paxton in a fun and fast-moving short horror novel that recalls the best of the 1980s mass-market horror best seller days, and Longhorn’s assured prose carries the tale along effortlessly. Known by horror aficionados as an editor with a discerning eye, Longhorn proves just as adept at writing fiction as he is at editing. This is the first in a trilogy, and there’s a bonus short story at the end. I can’t wait for the next installment. Note: I was given a copy of this book prior to its publication.

I really enjoyed this book. Not quite what I was expecting, but very well done. There was intrigue, mystery and a good plot. Very well written. All in all, good job David! I did receive a copy free in exchange for a honest review.

This book is charming, in every way. David Longhorn brings together classic elements in a British ghost story involving a coastal village, a brave heroine, a legend, a spell, and the perfect obstacle to solving an ancient, spooky mystery—World War II. Longhorn relies on excellent pacing and a knack for drawing indelible characters with a few deft lines. When the story crosses from detailed realistic scenes into something possibly supernatural, the atmosphere is delightfully chill and creepy. Recommended. The storyline kept me engaged which is a major factor for me as I read for a living. I’d like to know more about what the Sentinels were up to over their time guarding the king. I love a good ghost story.

I loved your book the Sentinels. This is not the evil haunting I was expecting but not disappointed. The Sentinels tells of 3 men who gave their lives to care for the spirit and body of their king. Their stories have been passed down for a thousand years in their small village in England. England today is at war with a Germany that is being led by an evil Adolph Hitler who happens to believe in SUPERNATURAL POWERS. Hitler is going after the kings crown but will have to confront the Sentinal ghosts who are aided by an AMERICAN reporter who has just discovered her supernatural powers. An engrossing story of war, battles with ghosts, history and romance. This would make a GREAT movie. I RECOMMEND..Enjoy !

Excellent supernatural thriller/suspense/ghost story! I’ve found a number of wonderful new authors via my membership, many from Scare Street. David Longhorn is definitely one to watch. Am eagerly awaiting the second part of this trilogy!

A good read. The characters were good but not developed. As far as figuring out who the villain was, I found that pretty predictable. Still looking forward to reading the next installment.

This series started out with a bang & just keeps gaining momentum as it forges ahead. The Sentinels Series of books are not your usual ghost stories, neither are they your average horror novels. They are an amalgamation of supernatural mystery mixed with a touch of suspense-filled horror. If you want something beyond the usual blood-&-guts gorefest, read this series of books. You won’t be disappointed!Eagerly anticipating book 3, “The Smog”!!

David Longhorn’s author bio reveals him to be a lifetime fan of classic horror (which I also love) so I was very intrigued to see how his interest in the genre would express itself. Sentinels did not disappoint – it would be an absorbing and pleasurably creepy tale for anyone, but it is great fun to read if (like me) you are a big fan of M.R.James’ ghost stories, as there are many sly references to a particular one of those in it! In some ways Sentinels takes up where M.R.James’ story leaves off – James died before the outbreak of WW2, and Sentinels is set during the War. However, the book has a strong, likeable and very un-Jamesian protagonist in Rachel Rubin, an American reporter. There were some beautifully done dramatic moments – my favourite being the ringing of bells in a drowned church steeple under the sea. I cannot say more for fear of spoilers, but I thought that was an excellent touch. I will definitely be reading the following books in the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, as well as the entire series. I’m left with a few questions, however.****WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!****What was the deal with the “cigarette that obviously wasn’t simply a cigarette” & Col. Bryce? Falling dead from the fumes I could see. Cyanide, arsenic, other poison, okay. But why – & by what means – did he just vanish? Was he a ghost, too? Some supernatural being?WHY did Tony have to die? I know The Sentinels were all about honor & serving their king/protecting the crown. I could understand why they’d feel as though they’d need to kill Emily to keep the Order of Eschaton from using her as their innocent sacrifice & adding her powers as a seer to their evil cabal. But Tony’ s death made little sense to me other than as an appeasement to The Sentinels’ need for “honor”.WHY was the Smog only blanketing the capital, & why did it disappear when the Order was decimated & the doorway to the demonic realm closed? Was it purely a supernatural occurrence, or a mixture of fog, smoke from the coal-burning fires throughout the city, & evil emanations? No definitive explanations were given for these things. Were we readers meant to be left to ponder, perhaps?

A fun and smart read with plenty of chills. I loved the mixing of war-time drama with the supernatural and fable. Rachel was also a smart, well-developed heroine with her wits about her and I ended up caring for her quite a bit.

This is a good World War II ghost story. Story revolves around a crown from the early Anglo-Saxon era, and the individuals that want to unearth it. The only problem is that the crown is protected by Sentinels. Good writing and exciting reading.

Excellent way to draw me in. Reading about the past and it’s nightmares oddly enough, I found refreshing. I was happy to see another scare street team writer do a great job! Good job Mr. Longhorn.

The Sentinel series of books are not my favorite. I really wanted to love them because of the time period but they were just OK for me. I felt the ending of the series was a bit rushed and the characters weren’t as developed as I would like.

Have read and enjoyed some of David’s short stories in the past but was totally unaware of any full length novels, so ”Sentinels” came as a pleasant surprise.Enjoyed every minute. The subject matter was close to my heart as I have visited the location on the Suffolk coast, and being a fan of Monty, we’ll…’nuff said! AND what a lovely choice of name for the archaeologist, a real tribute to a wonderful lady who keeps our literary appetites well satisfied.A first class creepy, complete with fog, superstitious locals, and a very modest American who saves the day in her own quiet way.Now for volume two…

Really well thought out. Love the way it is woven into history and that the good prevails not a easy task helping those who have no bodies only hurting souls..

Good characters, solid plot gets you hook quickly, the plot is straight forward, but the background helps build a very well crafted book.
