Authors’ FAQs

AUTHORS' FAQs

  • My short story has a word count lower or higher than 3,000-7,000 words. Can I still submit?
Yes, we will consider stories that are slightly outside the word count range.
  • I submitted stories to Scare Street on the previous open call submissions. Can I submit the same stories again?
No, please don’t submit the same short stories that you submitted before. They will be automatically rejected.
  • Do you accept reprints?
Yes. Reprints must NOT be currently available anywhere in written digital format.  They can be available elsewhere in print or audio formats.
  • The story I submitted was selected by another publisher, how do I withdraw my submission?
Please let us know as soon as possible if submission is accepted or published by another publisher. To withdraw your submission, email us at [email protected] with the subject line “WITHDRAW SUBMISSION: [Title of the story you’re withdrawing]”.

If we select your story, please remove the work from consideration elsewhere immediately.
  • When will my work be published if selected?
Our anthologies are filled on a first-come, first-served basis when we receive signed contracts and finalized manuscripts. E-book and paperback release dates are within 3-6 months after the submissions period.

Based on reader reception, we may publish the English audio along with German and Spanish translations in all formats. You will be notified once production for these take place.

Details will be sent after your story is accepted for publication.
  • If my story is selected, how long do I have to wait before I can submit my short story to another publisher? Can I still sell foreign rights to other publishers?
E-book in English: You’ll have to wait 6 months starting from the date of publication. Scare Street will have 6 months exclusivity for English e-book rights. During the e-book exclusivity period, the story must NOT be available anywhere else in written digital format. After 6 months, it'll turn into non-exclusive and you're free to sell or distribute your story as many times as you wish.

E-book in foreign languages: We’ll only have non-exclusive rights for German and Spanish translations, so you can continue selling the foreign rights to other publishers at any point in time.

Print and audio in all languages: We’ll only have non-exclusive rights in print and audio formats. Which means you can simultaneously sell and publish your work in these formats at any point in time and as many times as you'd like.
  • I haven’t heard anything from Scare Street after my submission. How do I know the status of my submission?
Accepted submissions will receive a response via email, within 30 days after the submission deadline (October 26, 2020). Due to the sheer number of submissions we are unable to reply to all inquiries. We will review all submissions, so if you don't hear back within 45 days after the submission deadline, then it has not been selected.
  • How and when will I get paid?
Payment will be sent to the PayPal email address you provided in the submissions form by the e-book’s date of publication.
  • Do I have to pay for cover or editing costs?
No. You won’t be charged for cover or editing costs.
  • Do you provide free author copies?
Yes for e-book and audio formats in all languages.

No, we do not provide free author copies in print format.  They will be available at a retail price of $15.  However, we can coordinate the ordering of discounted author copies with a purchase of 10+ copies at once at 50% off retail.  We’ll provide these details to you when your story is selected for publication.
  • What happens after my story is submitted?
Our editing team will evaluate it.  If selected, we’ll send a contract for your review and signature. Then your story will go through revisions.  When finalized we’ll place you in an anthology, and you’ll receive the anthology in e-book format along with publication date.  If audio is produced and/or we translate your story to other languages, we will send you those author copies too.
  • I intend to use my pen name, but I used my legal name to sign the agreement. How do I ensure that my real name will not be revealed in the publication?
Only your pen name will appear in the anthology, promotion, etc. We will also send updates at various stages of the publication process. This way, you will be able to verify if there are any errors and mispronunciation.
