Do you feel it?

Can you hear it?

It’s right here, under the surface. That tremendous inhalation as we near the end of our time with Victor, Tom, Ariana, and Stefan.

This is the eighth book, and the minutes don’t seem quite as long as they should be. These small increments of time are racing past, faster and faster.

Victor and Tom have triumphed, but the question: will they continue to triumph, remains.

I hope that they will.

At this point in the story, the characters have achieved a momentum of their own. A speed and focus which I can guide, but not control. They’re barreling towards the end that Death has chosen for them, and whether or not we will bear witness to their deaths remains to be seen.

Even I don’t know what the outcome will be.

When the proverbial dust settles, I don’t know who, if anyone, will remain standing.

I want you to brace yourselves. There’s a rough spot coming, and you need to take a deep breath before you continue. You need to be ready, just like I do, for the end.

Think of it as a highway. The Victor and Tom Daniels Highway, and we’ve reached Exit 8. We’re getting off the blacktop and onto country roads. The going will be rough and bloody. And not all of us are getting out alive.
