The dead walk. And only one man can end their reign of terror…

For Vincent Donnelly, waking up in a field in the middle of nowhere was just the beginning. Frantic and terrified, he has no idea who he is, or how he got there. Nor does he know the five dead bodies lying next to him. All he knows for sure is that he hears whispering in his head. Voices that are not his own…

With no memories or friends to rely on, Vincent finds himself drawn to the town of Alder Falls. Somehow, he is certain this place is connected to his hazy past. But the local townsfolk urge him to leave before nightfall. For when the sun sets, the dead walk these shadowy streets and prey upon the living.

A chance encounter in town reveals that the voices in Vincent's head are the memories of lost souls, trapped within his shattered mind. Including a powerful necromancer, who has amassed the army of corpses plaguing the town. To solve the mystery of his past, Vincent must exorcise this sinister enemy from the confines of his mortal shell.

But setting such an evil presence free could unleash an even deadlier power. A being of pure darkness, who hungers for Vincent’s soul…

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ "This book has a lot of meat on its bones but still manages to move along briskly. You enjoy learning about & spending time with the main characters. There is much more going on in this world than what we get in this book, so I'm very excited to read the next entry in the series." - Reviewer

Chapter 3

The house looked Victorian and not a single other building in town shared the architectural style. It looked as though someone had simply cut and pasted it from another town into the end of the road here.

The lawn out front seemed understated, there were no huge trees or elaborate gardens. Just a few rose bushes and a well-trimmed lawn, as far as Vincent could tell in the dark. There was a single light illuminated next to the front door, under the cover of a large, wraparound porch.

“Hope he’s home,” Vincent whispered.

“I think everyone in town is home,” Fix said.

There was no sign of movement anywhere that Vincent could see. It was a straight run from where he was across the cul-de-sac to the mortuary. The laneway was long, but there didn’t seem to be anywhere for the creatures to hide.

“You think we’re good?” Vincent asked.

“I think we can see the exact same stuff. So maybe?” Fix answered. Vincent frowned. Fix was limited to using Vincent’s senses. He saw what Vincent saw and heard what Vincent heard. But he did have an uncanny ability to focus on small details that Vincent often missed. And he was good at using peripheral vision.

“Why do you think people are safe in their houses?” Vincent asked then. If the streets were littered with walking corpses, it seemed like something more robust than curtains and deadbolts were needed to keep them at bay.

“I don’t think we should worry about that right now,” Fix answered. He was right, of course.

“Maybe, yeah.”

There was no way to get from his hiding place to the mortuary laneway under the cover of darkness. The center of the cul-de-sac had a small plot of land in it, like the hole in a donut. A street light was planted firmly in it, bathing the whole area in an orangey yellow glow. The mortuary itself had two smaller lamps planted at either end of the wrought iron fence that bordered the laneway.

A moan in the night stopped Vincent before he even started on his run to the house. He crouched against the tree, turning to look back the way he had come. A different creature ambled up the road.

This one was a woman. She looked almost normal until she got under the light of a street lamp. Much of her throat had been ripped open, but the wounds looked recent. She was missing one eye, and her lower jaw was torn away.

Her gait was normal, not the awkward stride of the first thing Vincent had seen. She looked like a lady out for an evening stroll, except for her face.

Another moan escaped her broken mouth. It was answered across the street from Vincent. A second monstrosity stumbled from the shadows. This one was large, with thick arms and legs. There were no wounds that Vincent could see on its body as it walked into the light.

“Constantin,” Fix said suddenly. The large bald head reflected the lamplight. It was Bogdan’s brother. His flesh was waxy and pale, but it was him. The man from Vincent’s memory.

Constantin looked at the woman. There was something different about him. The first thing that Vincent had seen was very rudimentary, almost. It seemed like an animal roaming its territory. The woman, too, seemed to lack any kind of understanding. The expression on her ruined face was blank. She was like an automaton. But Constantin moved differently. Carried himself differently. Like he was aware. Like he was still alive
