Every haunting hides an unfinished story, and Frank Benedict finishes it...
Frank Benedict left the monastery but never left his faith behind. He carries iron in his pockets and salt in his palms, and he doesn't send spirits away. He listens until he finds what's keeping them here.
Join Frank as he investigates a young man who keeps glimpsing a cruel, leering stranger wearing his own face in every reflection, encounters a lonely woman falling for a tender suitor who is quietly draining the life from her, and confronts a mansion where screams shatter the night and something unspeakable waits behind the cellar wall.
Haunted Secrets: Tales of Frank Benedict Vol. 5 features seven chilling tales where the familiar hides the monstrous and nothing stays buried for long. Come see what Frank Benedict finds when he looks closer. Not every secret dies with the person who kept it.

Screamer
There’s no power. Dusk is slowly bringing night to the Talbot House as Frank lights a camping lantern and hands it to Candace. He uses a heavy flashlight and carries a smaller flashlight as a spare. His research has found no instances of the ghost interfering with lights of any kind, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.
They methodically check the rooms on the upper story, moving in a pool of radiance. Frank notes that Candace is not nervous. She is slightly startled by her reflection in the bath-room mirror and makes a joke of it. They move downstairs to find more mirrors in the old ballroom, plus the sparkling chandelier overhead. Nothing stirs, and there is no hint of a spectral presence. The kitchen, the dining room, the drawing room, and the library all seem devoid of anything untoward.
Candace slides a finger along a shelf and holds it up to reveal an oval of gray dust.
“Ghosts are poor housekeepers, I’m guessing.”
They move back to the kitchen and a cellar door. It is padlocked. Candace has the key, and they go down, with Frank leading. The cellar is cool, but not abnormally so. Some old furniture is heaped in one corner. Otherwise, it is four bare walls and a cracked concrete floor. There is still no hint of a ghostly presence. Night has fallen by now, but from reports he’s read, Frank thinks the ghost is a creature of the small hours.
“We should probably get some shuteye if we can,” he opines.
Candace, running a slender hand up his arm, makes a suggestion that will deprive them of sleep for some time. Frank decides that, since he is mixing business with pleasure, he might as well get as much of the latter as possible.
***
The scream wakes Frank from a deep sleep. Candace is tense and unmoving as he disen-tangles himself from the blankets and sits up. The lantern, turned down to its lowest level, barely illuminates the bedroom. Frank can see no other presence. The scream comes again, so piercing that it makes him flinch.
“Can you see it?” Candace whispers.
He hears her fear and confusion. He holds her close for a moment, whispering reassur-ing words. And then, surprising himself, he says something else.
